Welcome!
I'm very proud to announce that my Extractions 2007 series is currently on display at the [Mission Cliffs] climbing gym through December 31, 2007. If you're interested in viewing this collection in person and live in the bay area, feel free to stop by the gym during their [regular business hours].

I hope you enjoy the photographs and stories on this site. These pieces represent my best efforts to communicate an original perspective of the natural world. You can learn more about my artistic philosophy [here].

Extractions 2007
The master photographer Ansel Adams once wrote that he preferred “the term extract over abstract, since [he could] not change the optical realities, but only manage them in relation to themselves and the format.” In many ways, the photographs in this series represent my principle desire to capture the beauty of nature by extracting just a few of its details, leaving the rest to the imagination.

Often the most subtle departure from an ordinary composition can conceal identity. Indeed, many of these images may seem abstract or misleadingly unfamiliar. Some are more accessible from a distance, whereas others are only recognized upon close viewing. Some are hidden by compressing long periods of time into an instant; others are obscured by carefully chosen compositions. A few lack focus in areas of their most suggestive characteristics, yet others strongly focus on those details that are least familiar.

I hope you enjoy viewing this collection, whatever you see in each photograph. One fascinating quality of “extract” photography is its ability to transform your impressions over repeated viewings. What you see today may not be what you see tomorrow.
